Legendary producer and television host Don Cornelius of Soul Train was found dead in his Sherman Oaks home this morning. It appeared to be of his own doing as LA County Assistant Coroner Ed Winter was quoted as "It was reported as a suicide, a self inflicted wound".

I just read this amazing blog post from "Single Dad Laughing" at danoah.com . It was about being a better dad to our kids, and controlling your impulses when you need to discipline. You still have to discipline. It should not come from a place of emotional anger, take a walk and think about it then come back and deal with it. Is that not how you would want your kids to handle things when they get angry? One of the things that really struck me was this "Do you not understand that anger is almost always an emotion for people who wish to control others while simultaneously failing to control themselves?"

Could not have said it better myself. As a person who is in process and  struggles with anger issues this made me think even more about yelling when my kids spill a drink. No matter how much they could have done better or been more responsible, it is just an accident and they did not consciously do it. here is the beginning of his post, please link to his page to finish reading as it is an amazing and insightful article.

I feel a need to write this post after what I witnessed at Costco yesterday. Forgive me for another post written in desperation and anger. Please read all the way to the end. I know it’s long, but this is something that needs to be said. It’s something that needs to be heard. It’s something that needs to be shared.

As Noah and I stood in line to make a return, I watched as a little boy (he couldn’t have been older than six) looked up at his dad and asked very timidly if they could buy some ice cream when they were done. The father glared him down, and through clenched teeth, growled at the boy to ”leave him alone and be quiet”. The boy quickly cowered to the wall where he stood motionless and hurt for some time.

The line slowly progressed and the child eventually shuffled back to his father as he quietly hummed a childish tune, seemingly having forgotten the anger his father had just shown. The father again turned and scolded the boy for making too much noise. The boy again shrunk back and cowered against the wall, wilted.

I was agitated. I was confused. How could this man not see what I see? How could this man not see what a beautiful spirit stood in his shadow? How could this man be so quick to stub out all happiness in his own boy? How could this man not cherish the only time he’ll ever have to be everything to this boy? To be the person that matters most to this boy?"

His family has confirmed that legendary Penn State football coach has died. he died this morning surrounded by family and friends after he was taken off his ventilator. Jo Pa had 409 wins in 46 years of coaching. He was a beloved figure in Pennsylvannia and plenty will be said about other issues but today we choose to honor the positive aspects of his life.He was 85.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.

He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.

He has been many things in his life — a soldier, scholar, mentor, coach, friend and father. To my mother he was and is her soul mate, and the last several weeks have shown the strength of their love. To his children and grandchildren he is a shining example of how to live a good, decent and honest life, a standard to which we aspire.

When he decided to forego a career in law and make coaching his vocation, his father Angelo had but one command: Make an impact.

As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact. That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country.

And so he leaves us with a peaceful mind, comforted by his "living legacy" of five kids, 17 grandchildren, and hundreds of young men whose lives he changed in more ways than can begin to be counted.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania or the Penn State-THON, The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

Pierre Raymond, Never Forgotten

I was going through my abandoned Myspace account and I found this blog post from before Kidfrank.com, Pierre was my friend and I had a lot of good times with him. Concerts,Boston, parties. He was loved by so many people in Southern New Hampshire and the Merrimack Valley.He had a heart of gold and would truly give you the shrt off his back. He was known to dance a jig at the drop of a hat. I am honored to still call his siblings and Mom friends.As long as I am alive he will never be forgotten. RIP

When Delta Flight 1880 landed late Saturday at Logan International Airport, the pilot went on the intercom to make a request of the passengers preparing to grab their carry-on bags: Sit for a moment and honor a fallen soldier.

''The pilot said, 'We have a hero on this flight and sadly, he isn't with us, but his mother is escorting his remains,' " said Barbara Bell, sister of Sergeant Pierre A. Raymond, 28, an Army reservist from Lawrence who died Tuesday in Germany after being wounded in Iraq.

The normal bustle of an emptying airplane immediately ceased, she said.

''He went on to say that 'a sergeant from the Army is escorting them as well', and then [the pilot] thanked him for doing what he did and for keeping us safe and free."

As Raymond's mother, Santina, got up to walk off the plane, her fellow passengers gave her a standing ovation.

''I was thankful that he was remembered like he was angel," said Santina Raymond, who spent yesterday at her Lawrence home preparing for her son's funeral on Wednesday. ''He was a hero, so everybody cheered. It was wonderful. He was wonderful."

Pierre Raymond died from injuries sustained after a Sept. 15 attack near Ramadi, Iraq, where he was hit in the chest and neck with flying shrapnel while in his sleeping quarters. Immediately after he was wounded, Raymond was talking and even flirting with the nurses who treated him, said Bell, who lives in Palo Alto, Calif. But military doctors in Iraq couldn't stop the bleeding and sent Raymond to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for emergency treatment, where he was kept alive until his family arrived.

''We were all flown out on military orders," said Bell, also a former reservist.

The family stayed at Raymond's side during his last hours.

''Pierre just had this capacity that very few people have. . . . This capacity for life," said Bell, 30. ''Even as a kid, we don't have many family photos of him because he was always running in the park."

Bell said her brother joined the Army in 1998 and spent 13 months in Bosnia as a military mechanic. He was discharged in 2001, she said, and spent some time traveling before being called back in the National Guard to serve with the 228th Forward Support Battalion, 28th Infantry Division, which supported a Marine Expeditionary Force. Raymond was dispatched for retraining and arrived in Kuwait in June. He'd barely been in Iraq a week before he was wounded.

For two weeks prior, he called his mother nearly every morning at 6 a.m., Boston time, his sister said. ''He'd even sent letters saying Kuwait was kind of boring," Bell said. ''He was waiting to be attached to a unit."

A true hero is Captain Sully Sullenberger who saved hundreds of lives on January 15, 2009. After taking off from New York's LaGuardia airport, the flight 1549 lost both engines by bird strike. Captain Sullenberger then became the first pilot to successfully ditch a commercial airliner in water.By successfully I mean no deaths. He then walked the plane and did not leave until all his passengers were off. That's a gentleman. Of course you're older. You're either older, or you're dead. Period.

Well, I am older. And I have come to realize that there's really no such thing as a 'bad' Christmas, birthday, or other-occasion gift. Any gift is something somebody wanted you to have. If it was a that bad a mismatch, get to know that person better, for later on. Work on that stuff.
Having said that, there are times when things just go horribly wrong.

Example 1: I was about 11, and my Dad decided to give my brother and I a thing called a 'Hermit Crab Lab' for Christmas. Basically, it's the same thing you see in every mall these days: Plastic tank with a vented top, some sand in the bottom, extra shells for the crabs to move in and out of, as is their nature.

We will never know why; maybe it was a little too much Absolut Christmas cheer, but, Dad and his girlfriend (at the time) made the decision to leave the Crab Lab in the trunk of the car overnight, on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, the Crab Lab came with two actual live crabs, neither of whom were prepared or knowledgeaible enough to survive a New England winter evening in the trunk of a car.

So, Christmas morning, it's time to open presents, and, well, I should point out here that we have an older sister too. who wasn't included in the Crab Lab experience. Perhaps giving your teenage daughter crabs on Christmas morning is considered 'bad form', in some places?? I mean, this IS New Hampshire, but, come on, right??

Anyway, we're opening stuff, mostly AC/DC and Kiss cassette tapes and maybe some socks, and then it's time to open the Crab Lab. Long story short, the crabs simply didn't make it. We opened a box of cold hard reality, that morning, and never forgot it. Eventually a trip to the pet store got us some new recruits for the Lab, who lived for about 6 weeks. Basically, hermit crabs are giant bugs that live in a shell, and they're just not that interesting. I'd rather have a lava lamp, to be quite honest.

Example 2: My Mom, to the very last Christmas we still had her, always made sure we had a full stocking on Christmas morning. The strange thing was, as she got older, she seemed to get more and more of her stocking stuffers at CVS; We'd all get up bright and early on Christmas morning, and basically dump out a pile of lotion, shaving cream, deoderent, shampoo, and after shave, with a pouch of chocolate coins. We still can't figure out, to this day, what she was trying to tell us.

There was one year, though, that she really outdid herself, and decided it would be useful for us all to have our own thermometers. The only problem was, she grabbed them off the shelf, not realizing they were actually infant rectal thermometers. And on Christmas morning, as we all basically laughed our asses off, Mom collected these thermometers, and told us that this was the end of the subject. She didn't want to hear another word. Ever.

My stepfather, John, pointed out that it was already too late: This incident would be thrust into the 'annals' of our family Christmas history.

And so, as we all get older, try and remember that Christmas isn't about what you want, but what other people thought you should have. And be thankful nobody ever gave you a dead crab or a butt thermometer.

Joe Raymond of Lawrence, MA who now lives in Manhattan, NY was lucky enough to run into the most famous meat wearing person in the world. While doing his laundry at a laundromat in the East Village Gaga walked in with her peeps from Vanity Fair. The rest is history.

Joe said it was a very surprising to see Gaga walk in to the neigborhood laundromat. He said he asked for direction from the crew and they told him to just got about his business doing his laundry. Gaga was very nice to him and asked if had any quarters or laundry soap for her.Politely he said he did not. She then said "You can be honest and say, get your own, bitch."

NBA owners and players reached an agreement this morning around 3 AM. The NBA season is set to begin on Christmas Day with a triple header as scheduled. A 66 game season is to be played and a new schedule will be released in the next week, the regular season will be extended into the end of April. Lastly training camps will open on December 9th.
